Through the Fog

Based on the traditional Irish ballad The Foggy Dew, this intermediate string orchestra work unfolds as a dramatic wartime narrative. Stomping and knocking on the wood of the instruments throughout the piece evoke marching soldiers. A lyrical rubato opening filled with expressive lines and rich harmonies gives way to a fiery 6/8 jig. Rich color, textural contrast, and plenty of opportunities for vibrato deepen the storytelling to create a compelling choice for advanced high school ensembles ready to explore folk tradition, drama, and expressive nuance in concert or festival settings.
