Although the text is based loosely on Psalm 23, the piece itself is not meant to be specifically religious and can be sung in a number of settings. The two spoken iterations of the psalm text, while meant in this context to be a spoken declaration of strength in the face of encroaching darkness, can be omitted if desired.
