The winter holiday season might bring to mind the Radio City Rockettes and their famous Toy Soldier Dance. There were in fact, a number of composers who wrote March music for toy, tin or wooden soldiers. Four of those songs have been included in this medley: Parade of the Wooden Soldiers by Leon Jessel, March of the Toys from Babes in Toyland by Victor Herbert, violinist Fritz Kreisler's Toy Soldier March and The March of the Wooden Soldiers from Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite. In addition to those, Theo Bonheur wrote his own March of the Tin Soldiers and Gabriel Pierne composed Marche des Petits Soldats de Plomb (March of the Little Tin Soldiers. Even Robert Schumann had a Soldier's March as part of his Album for the Young. This transcription, Toy Soldier Marches, is designed for high school string orchestra because of the rhythmic technique (though not the range) required of the compositions.
