Tribus Miraculis

The text of this motet celebrates three manifestations of Christ's divinity traditionally celebrated on January 6th: "Today a star led the Magi to the manger; Today wine was made from water at the wedding; Today Christ deigned to be baptized by John for our salvation." Lassus's setting, delicately scored for a quintet with double altos, takes advantage of several opportunities for felicitous word-painting before ending with a chain of sonorous alleluias.
