Mozart wrote his Piano Trio #3 (K. 502) in 1786, the same year he wrote the Kegelstatt trio for clarinet, viola, and piano (K. 498). His early trios were piano dominated, but these later trios give the instruments more important roles, although the piano is still the leading instrument. The original piece for Violin, Cello, and Piano has been set by John Gibson for B-flat Clarinet, Cello, and Piano. Considering the Kegelstatt trio was published in Mozart's time for Violin, Viola, and Piano with the clarinet listed as an alternate instrument, it is no great leap to consider that a piece written about the same time....and in the key of Bb....would work very well with the clarinet taking the violin part.
