Tune of the Midnight is based on the classic Cantonese children's rhyme "Wu Geng Tian", which has long been used as a lullaby. "Geng" is the ancient Chinese unit for measuring nighttime: one night was divided into five "Geng", each equivalent to two hours in the modern timekeeping system. "Wu Geng" is the fifth "Geng" refers to the period from 3 a.m. to 5 a.m.
The original music score is written by the Guangzhou famous local composer Zheng Zumian, and the newly arranged version for string orchestra and piano accompaniment is composed by Luo Zhongyun. The overall structure follows the ternary form, with distinct emotional layers and a playful, childlike character.
