In 1720, J. S. Bach began composing his 2 and 3 Part Inventions, or Praeambula and Fantasiae, to be included in his Clavier Booklet for Wilhelm Friedemann Bach. Dedicated to his 9 year old son Wilhelm, these keyboard pieces were intended to teach him to play the harpsichord, and later J. S. Bach rewrote them as musical exercises for all his students. Papa Bach described these pieces as straightforward instruction, demonstrating to eager amateurs how to cleanly play in two and three voices and acquire a strong appreciation for composition. W. F. Bach did indeed master the keyboard and became a fine composer himself.
These short, beautifully crafted works have inspired generations of musicians of every ilk and instrumentation to come together as duos and trios, expressing the concentrated genius found within these musical forms.
This is an arrangement for violin cello.
