Two sides of the same coin. is a piece written for Mezzo-Soprano, Alto Saxophone, and Percussionist. During a recent conversation with Dr. Baljinder Sekhon, we discussed the role of music as therapy, and how we might consider using composition as therapy when times get tough. It's in this vein that Two sides of the same coin. was born. This piece, at its core, is a sonic admittance of my own ideas about my disability, as well my perception of how others view it. The piece builds on these insecurities, as well as recent experiences, to create a morose sonic space that asks the listener to reconsider how they interact with disability. The piece isn't meant to sadden or upset, but rather begin a dialogue about what it feels like to be visibly disabled.
