<p>Warm, flowing lyricism shapes this piece for high school band, unfolding through fluctuating tempos and richly layered harmonies. An extended clarinet solo opens the work with exposed, expressive writing before the ensemble gradually expands the texture. As lines thicken and harmonic tension builds, the piece drives toward a powerful climax before settling back into its earlier calm expression. It offers developing players a meaningful opportunity to grow musically while delivering an evocative, atmospheric concert performance.</p>

Episode is a quirky short piece that explores the homogenous sound and counterpoint which the clarinet choir is capable of. I took inspiration from organ preludes but went in a different direction as far as style and articulation go, with staccato and pizzicato-like figures contrasting with the long legato lines throughout. Episode is mostly diatonic and modal in material, but the middle section of the work is more chromatic and is reminiscent of an episode in a fugue. Hence the title.

    I'm an avid video gamer, and have been ever since I was a kid. In fact,
  Super Mario Galaxy was the Mario game that got me into music and video gaming
  in the first place, and the orchestral soundtrack of that game blew me away
  as well as how much it contributed to the charm of this grand Mario
  adventure. One thing I've always enjoyed in any video game is the final road
  that leads to the final boss. Fighting all of the enemies, overcoming
  obstacles, and going through tests that culminate all of the skills you've
  gained all across the adventure was always one of my favorite things ever
  about video gaming. This piece is just that. The music takes the listener
  through that tough last quest with the final boss showing their face at the
  end of the road. A grand fight ensues, with the boss going through stages of
  attacks but the main character triumphs as the music moves to a much broader
  section. The ending is a bold testament to all that the main character has
  accomplished, with the glorious feeling after besting the villain of the game
  washing over you, the player, as the credits roll...

    To Be Free chronicles an emotional transformation. Originally, the piece
  was written after I admitted romantic feelings to a friend but it means so
  much more than that. I learned to allow myself to feel my emotions fully
  through writing this music. Human relationships with emotions are unique and
  much like flowers; that is, we start closed off (like a bud) but then blossom
  and become receptive to our emotional "world." Thus, we allow our emotions..."to
  be free."

A Tree of Teas is a piece in which I composed based on how a particular tea tastes to me and how it makes me feel after drinking it. Earl Gray, Rooibos, Oolong, Ginger, and Green teas are the five movements and all have distinctly different flavors from bold tastes, smooth textures, and some even have a “bite” to them.

Closure is a wonderful feeling to have. To know that one can be in peace with their inner self, someone else, or even events that have transpired. While there might still be questions about some aspects, the situation as a whole feels settled. This piece illustrates that exact feeling, and is a meditation on the concept of gaining closure.

commissioned by Carolyn Sherrill and the Meridian Community Band (Okemos, MI) on their 50th Anniversary.

Commissioned by the Meridian Community Band for the occasion of their 50th Anniversary, Meridian Jubilee is about the roots of the group's name- a little place named Meridian Township. Located in Okemos, Michigan, this township has a historical museum with buildings such as a barn and town hall that can be toured. Additionally, there's a public park with nature all over so people can enjoy the small lake and the woods nearby. This piece starts with a fanfare, as is customary for a celebratory work but transitions into calmer and lyrical music representing the beauty this little slice of nature and history has to offer a rather large suburban region. A playful transition then ushers into the closing fanfare, based on the music that has already been heard. A unique concert opener for your high school, collegiate, or community band!

    Lately, Ive been intrigued by the nature of my dreams. Between the
  extremes that are aimless wandering of random visions and vivid nightmares,
  there is a lot to say about dreams. Dream Wanderer chronicles the feeling
  that I get when I experience sleep and dreams, with a lullaby-like theme
  tying the entire piece together despite its many moods. The lullaby theme
  comprises a large chunk of the piece, going through several variations and
  different orchestrations, modes, and meters. This gives way to a more active
  section with fast, repeated notes and the lullaby theme being stated with
  pizzicato to show how active dreams can be- flying around, talking to various
  characters, and visiting odd places! This transitions into the climax, which
  gives a glimpse into a more nightmarish world but it, like nightmares
  embedded into normal dreams, doesnt last long. That climax explodes away
  into a more creepy version of the lullaby theme, which represents my initial
  apprehension after the nightmare while looking around my dark room. One last
  statement of the lullaby theme with pizzicato ushers in a new sleep session
  as my worries slip away.

    Dragons are such cool mythical creatures. From their grandiose appearance
  to their docile states inside their dwellings, dragons have inspired folklore
  and fantasy stories for centuries. The bombastic sections of this piece
  depict the dragon showing just how large it is to the knights that are tasked
  with fighting it. The dragon occasionally goes into docile states in its
  cave, with small fire embers floating all around it.

Written as a prelude for the Stravinsky Octet, Nighttide
evokes visuals of the ocean at night. Its use of various
colors and counterpoint symbolize the waves washing
over each other under the moonlight.

As I was reading through the prompts from the students of the Amherst Bel Canto choirs when they commissioned this work, I thought about how important it is that we realize that children and teenagers are humans just like the rest of us. They experience hardships, emotions, struggles, triumphs, and love just the same. Rainbow in My Heart is a piece about hope and resilience in people, but do not be fooled by the apparent positivity throughout the piece. Peoples' struggles are valid. I recognize every one of them. Whether struggles be from inequities, hardships, their own insecurities, or discrimination, it is important to be who you truly are: a living, breathing, empathetic human being. We can use this empathy and understanding to bring others into a more positive world and to be the "rainbow in their heart." Even though the world is a very difficult place, I am emboldened by the empathy, kindness, and resilience of many people who exist.

    Every Sunday morning at around 7:30 AM, my parents and dog go on a hike. A
  location is usually selected ahead of time, and settings have varied from
  different town parks around the Albany, NY area to actual hiking trails. We
  began doing this during my undergraduate years and I go with them whenever I
  visit my hometown, and I will admit that I am not a morning person at all,
  but something about being able to take in nature with my family is truly special.
    
    
    
    This piece begins with a clarinet soli that gets transformed into a little
  expression of morning beauty. The rest of the piece is in 6/8 and showcases
  the light-hearted adventure of these hikes which do get a bit physical with
  some of the trails that weve chosen in the past. I wrote this piece as a
  token of these memories and as a birthday gift for my loving mother!

You're in a field, trotting and feeling all the wonderful grass and flowers all around you. It is a perfectly sunny day with no clouds in sight. There are butterflies and bees flying around pollinating flowers and various other plants. Out in the distance, you see a house in the middle of it. As you walk towards it, you feel everything beginning to slip away. Even as kind people start to come out and greet you. You wake up, with the final threads of the Warm Field Dream still hanging onto your mind...

    Three Odes really doesn't take itself seriously. At all. Inspired by wind
  band suites by Holst, Vaughn Williams, Milhaud, and Jacob (which are often
  referred to as band candy), this piece is cast in three movements. First up,
  a nostalgic march movement nodding to Vaughn Williams and Jacob, then a slow
  movement nodding to Jacob and Milhaud, and finally an annoying jig-like
  movement nodding to Holst. The work features modal harmonic language (with a
  few twists) in order to evoke the sense of odd familiarity with the
  aforementioned suites, but something is a little off; the entire piece
  features irregular phrase lengths of three, five, and even six bars rather
  than the usual four or eight. Additionally, there is no brass! (Ok, maybe one
  can make the case for saxes being brass...but eh.) Instead, the work is
  scored for an expanded woodwind section which is a nod to the fact that many
  military bands of the time were comprised of 2/3rds woodwinds.
