It was probably given to the lake by the Mississippian People. The Lake Mills Aztalan area was the northern outpost of the Mississippian culture. The piece begins with a rousing fanfare which segues to an ancient sounding tune recalling the ancient culture that surrounds Rock Lake and its mysterious manmade underwater pyramids, discovered in 1900. The ancient sounding tune transforms into a more fully developed Rock Lake theme in the next section. In between each melodic phrase, brief percussion and melody motifs can remind listeners of the inception of the Lake Mills City Band in 1844, eight years after Lake Mills was founded. The light military sounding motifs can remind listeners that the Lake Mills area also saw the US Army, including a young Abraham Lincoln, chase and ultimately capture Chief Blackhawk in 1832. Throughout the piece, short playful interludes can remind listeners of the enjoyment derived from Rock Lake. As you listen to the tender theme in the middle of the piece, one feels the enjoyment derived from an early morning at the lake surrounded by the beauty of nature. The ancient mysterious sounding tune returns once again and the final section is a recap of the Rock Lake theme. The piece ends peacefully after a final playful interlude.
