This piece is a vehicle to help the clarinet section work on their upper register. It is a three-movement suite of tunes from Ireland (The Rakes of Mallow), Scotland (The Blue Bells of Scotland), and England (The Coasts of High Barbary). It is written to have matching sections for the clarinets with a lower register melody in the beginning of the movement and then match it with the exact same fingerings later, with the addition of the register key. The tunes were chosen to offer work on contrasting styles.
