“Urlicht” (“Primal Light”) is the fourth movement of Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 (the “Resurrection Symphony”), a deeply spiritual
song drawn from Des Knaben Wunderhorn (The Youth’s Magic Horn), a collection of German folk poetry that Mahler often drew upon.
A solo alto sings the text (here taken by the fleugelhorn), accompanied by the orchestra in a chorale-like texture. A rising three-note
phrase sets the tone of solemnity and aspiration. The movement’s simplicity and sincerity make it one of Mahler’s most poignant
creations, embodying his lifelong preoccupation with death, transcendence, and the afterlife.
