Expanding on a traditional Lithuanian sutartine (part-song), this dreamy reverie is about a woman who sings a young man to sleep under the nine branches of a linden tree that was battered by a storm. Recognized by UNESCO as Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, sutartines are traditionally sung with solo lines and canon. This work preserves that texture in the first stanza and then diverts to a newly composed section that further illuminates the meaning of the text.
