This is one treatment of The Chorus of Hebrew Slaves your audience will not be expecting. The title of the film, Louchebem, is a French slang term for ‘butcher,’ which is fitting. Gorgeously animated in black and white, the film opens on the owner of a butcher shop who is mourning his late wife. As he takes a few swipes at a pesty fly his movements gradually become expressions of the music. After finally capturing the fly he decides to set it free. Then, overcome with emotion and inspired by the music, he allows himself to taken over completely by the melody. Alone in his store, he moves powerfully in a most unlikely pas de deux between a sweaty butcher and a fly. From the powerfully graceful moves of a hulking butcher, to the exquisite facial expressions and the symbolisms of the fly and wilting flowers, this film is equally profound and irreverent. And it is a powerful visual expression of the music.
