Vigil

Inspired by Nathaniel Hawthorne's book, The Scarlet Letter, this song depicts Rev. Dimmesdale's secret agony expressed during his nightly vigils. This piece is part of a larger collection called Fusing Canons: Melodies of Great Books by piano composer, Preston Atwood. Fusing Canons includes fifteen original piano compositions, all of which stem from inspirations (themes; characters; scenes) from timeless literature in the Western canon. The fusion of song and literature is a deliberate attempt to transform the True, Good, and Beautiful into melodies that motivate listeners to pick up a good book and let it change them. The playing level of the songs ranges between intermediate and advanced.
