Boston Common Brass is scored for 8 B-flat trumpets. Duration: approx. 5 min. This is a celebratory piece, with melodies, throbbing cluster chords and unexpected sounds. The ending section features a gorgeous single-line melody distributed/overlapped between the trumpets, and then followed by bursts of 'free' sounds, like fireworks. Players can surround the audience in a balcony or behind them. The premiere was in Sanders' Theatre, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, 1987. Published by Visible Music.

Boston Common Brass for Eight Trumpets

Trumpet Octet

Pulling, for 4 flutes or as many flutes as possible, was conceived as a somewhat-planned improvisation and premiered in 1985. It's a quiet, rather soothing piece, with key-clicking and breath sounds in the opening. Much of the piece is grounded on a low D pedal. Players read from the score and are divided into two parts, with their pitches overlapping. The whole thing is quite free in execution. Published by Visible Music.

Flute Quartet

Scored for four trumpets (in C) and four trombones, this 5-minute piece has varied styles and moods, and "a peppery series of contrapuntal flourishes". The fanfare premiered in July 1987 at the Hollywood Bowl by Los Angeles Philharmonic Institute players, Boyde Hood, conducting. Tower Piece is an altered version of Hasse's 8-trumpet work, Boston Common Brass, with a different introduction. Published by Visible Music.

The title, kinkh, implies disjunct, irregular movement in its use of silence and rhythm. A fully-notated improvisational piece, there is a feeling of jazz to some of the harmonies, and a brief section can be improvised. There are numerous meter changes.. and lots of counting involved - an "ideal recital piece for a cool teenage pupil" (or older!). Duration is approx. 3:30. Published by Visible Music.

Piano Solo

Reflecting Dreams is scored for 50 brass players: 18 trumpets, 12 horns, 12 trombones and 8 tubas, divided into two choirs. It can be rehearsed relatively quickly with high school or college-age players, or professionals! Premiered by brass players at the Tanglewood Music Center, 1993, further performances have been in numerous US states, the UK and Germany. The recording is from a performance in London.

Silk Water is scored for piano left-hand (for advanced students and professionals), but can be played with two hands, if desired (for intermediate-level players). The overall mood relates to a sense of calmness, of suspended time. The piece was written for pianist Leon Fleisher, who gave the premiere in Boston, 1992, and performed it many times subsequently.
