This 16-minute monodrama for soprano and orchestra was inspired by Samuel Barber's 1962 dramatic monologue Andromache's Farewell, and like that work, it sets a scene from the great classical Greek dramatist Euripides. Barber's libretto is drawn from his tragedy The Trojan Women, and mine uses parts of a long monologue from another great Euripides tragedy, Medea. Although the protagonists and circumstances in the two scenes are very different, both compositions similarly share the very dark and tragic theme of mothers saying goodbye to their about-to-be murdered young sons.

Libretto by Royce Vavrek, based on and further inspired by Mermaid in the Jar by Sheila Heti.

This duet occurs in the second portion of a triptych of short chamber operas (Mermaid in the Jar, Prairie Dogs, and Fine and Dandy) that take place entirely within an eleven-year-old Girl's bedroom. Over the course of a few days, a mermaid, a family of stuffed prairie dogs, and singing groups of chicken pox and shingles force her to confront what it means to care for others and be cared for herself. In this scene, The Girl sends her new adopted taxidermied prairie dog parents on a date, but they are unfamiliar with the ways of human courtship. It's awkward.

Projeto Puccini

The untimely passing of Brazilian Maestro Antonio Meneses left a deep wound in many of us, whether we knew him personally or not. After the immense honour that had been creating the edition of the Capriccio sulla Niobe di Pacini for cello solo by Alfredo Piatti with him still alive, something more had to be done. 
When Brazilian cellist Raiff Dantas Barreto shared with me that M Meneses had proposed him to create a project around the most famous arias by Puccini arranged for cello ensemble, we both realised that we had to do our best to complete what destiny prevented him to. 

The Projeto Puccini (Puccini Project) is possibly the last project M Meneses conceived and we are proud to be finally able to unveil it to the world. 
It consists of seven among the most famous arias from Puccini's operas arranged for Voice and Cello Ensemble (5 parts). Each title, then, also contain the soloist part arranged for a Solo Violin (for the female arias) or for Solo Cello (all of them). 

Each aria will be available separately in digital form and bundled in a single great book in both physical (coming Early 2025) and digital form.
