Voice Fragments

"In my interpretation, the poem Voice Fragments is about the communication between a you and a me – dialogues that are intimately tied to the relationship between voices and words or speaking and listening. With regard to myself, listening also involves paying attention to the tone of voice and body language of the speaker, and not only the words. If I choose not to listen, I would be compromising my ability to empathize, which would cause me to forfeit my voice and also make the world a poorer place. The piece begins with sounds – a-ah, n-ng, s –, fragments that are also building blocks for words, units used and reused in various combinations to convey meaning. The same principle applies to music, where simple elements are used to build compositions, and they can also alter the meaning of the piece. This version is in English, but the original composition had Swedish lyrics and was first per-formed as Rostfragment in 2015.” – Cecilia Franke
