The Restful March is aptly named because it is a march full of rests! It is a fun and educational piece for beginners who can play the notes of the D major scale. It combines patterns that follow the scale and some that jump along the arpeggio. Rests occur strategically on strong and weak beats forcing musicians to count and pay attention. The very idea of a march full or rests is funny and should add to the enjoyment of playing this piece.

In this inspired work for cello and chorus (sung in Hebrew) Minsky has included a prayer used in both the Jewish and Christian liturgies, and combined it with the traditional Jewish hymn "Ein Keloheinu". The cello interacts joyfully with the chorus - accompanying, singing and soloing. The work begins with a popular-oriented rhythmical sensibility sure to engage the audience, eventually leading them on a journey in the very essence of holiness! It has an inclusive spirituality and sonority that will appeal to people of all backgrounds.

Summer Haze is the composers's first concerto for cello and string orchestra (percussion optional). Based on songs composed in his youth, it has an energy that could only have come from those times. Yet themes are developed in the style of a classical concerto and add new ideas. Whereas most concertos are written to show off the technical abilities of the instrumentalist, this concerto was written for pure enjoyment. At all times it is a group effort and everyone should pull together to create balance and harmony. The piece is of moderate difficulty. It is written for cello and string orchestra (percussion and/or piano optional). An arrangement is also available for cello and piano (bass and/or percussion optional).

There have been many violin concertos, and there have been many pieces for school orchestra, but there has never been a concerto for school orchestra featuring the orchestra teacher! However, the most important feature of this piece is the interplay between the teacher and students. The concerto provides a rare opportunity for an orchestra to interact with their teacher and for a teacher to model concerto playing in a manner that is creative and satisfying. It would also be a fun piece to program for a pops, community or symphonic concert.

A heroic concerto for cello and full symphony orchestra. It was composed during Hurricane Sandy, and loosely based on the life of Genghis Khan. A classic concerto in form, it employs the pentatonic scale, and an instrumental version of Mongolian throat singing. It also includes "celtar" and a rock inspired intensity.  (An arrangement for cello and piano also available.) The narrator tells the joke then the orchestra "acts out" the concept. The first, with its steady dotted rhythm, represents jumping rope. The second imitates a helicopter. Dissonance is used throughout but it must be "in tune" dissonance. The third giving the impression of a boat, uses polyrhythms. And the last using chromatics to imitate laughter, has the orchestra itself becoming part of the joke. Intonation and rhythm, and timing (for the narrator as well) will lead to success.

LEGENDS OF CELLANDIA (for cello orchestra, 5-string electric bass and percussion) by Aaron Minsky (commissioned by the London Cello Society) is a tone poem with a Brahmsian sonority utilizing conventions of progressive rock! There are six cello sections plus one "celtar" section (cellos played like guitars). Legends of Cellandia would be a perfect concert selection for any gathering of cellists from 7 to 100 (or more). It creates a full, satisfying sound, tinged with wit and humor that is sure to delight audiences the world over.

Though considered in Medieval times "the devil in music" the tritone is widely used in modern music. Tritone Mischief provides an opportunity to practice this important interval and the finger patterns it engenders. Long trills, syncopated rhythms and musical satire are also featured, as are many other bits of mischief.

This music is meant to sound like the flying meanderings of a bee. As the piece progresses the bee becomes more and more annoying. Finally, the slap on the music stands represents a swat, and the unison glissando represents the dive of the bee to the ground. Is he dead? We do not know. And that is why this piece is called: To Bee or Not to Bee?

Child's Play contains children's games and is relatively easy (as in the expression "child's play"), yet it explores various rhythms, as well as playing on offbeats and coming in mid measure (bar). Using only open strings, it nonetheless requires playing on all the strings. It also uses every type of note from whole notes to sixteenth notes reinforcing note values. Then there is the fun factor: the incorporation of the clapping game, Miss Mary Mack, and various foot stamps, claps, slaps and snaps. A real crowd (and student) pleaser!

The unifying principle of Open Sesame is the fact that the whole piece was composed using only open strings! This makes it easy in that it doesn't use the left hand, but there are challenges for the bow with string crossings and rhythmic patterns including triplets in 8th and 16th notes and a syncopated pizzicato bass. Open Sesame is a command associated with opening up the doorway to a magical cave. The music creates the feeling that a magical path has been revealed!

Eine Kleine Fun Musik is based on the first movement of the beloved Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, but goes into far-flung territories that would probably have surprised and delighted Mozart. Indeed, he may very well have taken his music to similar places had he known about the modern styles we have today. It would be a fun piece for a Pops, Orchestral or Chamber concert. It could also be performed by advanced high school or university orchestras. Discover new levels of joy in this surprisingly joyful masterpiece!

Porcui the Porcupine is an unusual yet fulfilling piece that creates modernistic soundscapes. The strangeness of the rhythmical sounds creates the somewhat unnerving impression of a porcupine flexing his quills. The notes are relatively easy but there are some octave jumps and spots where students must count multiple measures of rests and come in in the middle of a measure (bar). Intonation practice will be crucial. The piece provides a taste of modern music in a way that is fun. After all...how could a piece about a porcupine name Porcui not be fun?

The High Low Waltz addresses the fundamental issue of moving between F and F#, which entails using the high and low 1st finger on violin and the high and low 2nd finger on violin and viola, the 2nd and 3rd fingers on cello, and the 2nd and 4th fingers and high and low 1st finger on bass. It explores these dry technical issues, yet by being in the form of a waltz, it is fun to play.

A Walk in the Park is ..."a walk in the park" (easy)! But it is also a virtual walk in the park! With all instruments in 1st position, we hear a strolling theme built on the pentatonic scale, interspersed with episodes of 8th notes using the mixolydian mode (lowered 7th) portraying the happenings in a park. I suggest these scales be practiced in warm up exercises. The melody and all the challenges are shared by all instruments. Make sure to observe good intonation and dynamics.

A Walk in the Park

The first movement of the Moonlight Sonata is one of Beethoven's most beloved pieces, however the second movement is a delightful gem that should be better known. Taken up a half step to the easier key of D, it can be played by student orchestras, with or without piano, giving students an early experience of Beethoven.

This Brahms Rhapsody sounded to me like a lost cello sonata. In my arrangement I gave the cello melodies, harmonies and bass lines. The piano shares equally and also has moments to shine alone. What a wonderful addition to a concert this would be!
