We Plow the Fields

The lyrics to this traditional hymn were written in 1792 and set to music around 1800. Of German origin, it was commonly used in connection with harvest festivals; which led to the hymn becoming a Thanksgiving standard in America. Unfortunately omitted from most modern hymnals, the music features a delightful melody supported by solid harmonies. This setting is written essentially in hymn style with a contrasting section for three-part women and one for unison men. Easily accessible to the average church choir, it will be appreciated by choir directors who are preparing for the busy holiday season.
