Here is a marvelous fusion of rich harmonic language in the jazz tradition, and choral singing in the a cappella tradition. Brubeck's handling of this Christmas carol is not highly rhythmic, rather it's an essay in color - tight 9th and 11th chords give way to expansive harmonic structures that test the ranges of all voices. From the playful treatment of the word "following" to the massive strokes on "star of wonder," this is an absolutely wonderful setting for large or experienced choirs.
