When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd

This piece is the second movement from the larger work Three Elegies for Chorus based on the poems of Walt Whitman. This particular text was composed as an elegy for President Abraham Lincoln, and the choral setting captures the bold directness for which the poet is well known in a lovely a cappella work for mixed or tenor-bass choirs.
