"Who Will Sing Me Lullabies" is a modern folk tune penned by Kate Rusby, written after and about the loss of a dear friend. In this arrangement by Andrew Vance, the beautiful, lilting melody is passed between each voice part as the emotional setting grows from a place of confusion to acceptance.
This piece is a fantastic exercise in part independence, gentle swing, and the importance of intent when singing. Colors of folk and jazz harmony are combined and highlighted interchangeably throughout the piece, while the tempos and rhythms remain in the dreamlike fog that Rusby paints so poignantly. Silence is used sparingly, offering a lesson in stagger breathing and emotional intent in tandem. Lastly, the subjects of light and dark are explored in the changing of keys midway through the piece, again informed by the journey toward closure.
Vance chooses to dedicate this piece to his Gran Gran, Andrea. Your group may dedicate this piece to anyone you see fit, should you so choose.
