A fun, programmatic concert band piece depicting a child's wind-up toy that is wound up, sent on its way, and eventually runs down and stops, only to be rewound and started on its way again.
The 7/4 time signature is divided into a 4+3 beat pattern, and measures are divided (with dashed lines) into these two divisions. Conducting each bar as a 4-beat followed by a 3-beat pattern is recommended.
The ranges of all parts have been kept very reasonable, but there are some challenging rhythms and syncopations for younger students. Many of the rhythmic challenges are either ostinatos or are repeated in other ways, making it fairly easy to teach the rhythms.
Scored to be playable by smaller bands, this piece includes two parts for clarinet, alto sax and trumpet, and single parts for all other instruments. Five percussionists can cover all the parts.
