The modes that were introduced in volume 4 are used in the songs and pieces selected for volume 5, as well as the more usual forms of the minor scale with the sharpened seventh. The settings include the chords on the fourth and fifth notes of these modes and scales. An extensive section of rhythmic exercises and some settings of short dramatic scenes concludes the book.
