his piece was commisioned for a good friend of mine for his senior recital. They played trombone, so naturally I thought of the idea to write a trombone quartet. The only parameters that they had given me was that the piece could be put together in roughly 4-6 rehearsals. Because of this parameter, I decided to write something lyrical and very in the box (rhythmically wise) so that the players would be able to come back in easily if they lose their spot in the music. 

"Night and Day" is a piece that dwells in the difference that us humans perceieve night and daytime. For me persoanlly, I think nighttime is more mysterious because of the lack of light, whereas daytime is very joyous because of light. The piece goes back and forth between the two, but ultimately ends up representing a sunset, where everything feels at peace.

Trombone Quartet

This is the third movement of "Suite of Old American Folk Songs", so I decided to throw a jazz/barbershop quartet feel to it. It goes through different styles like a "burlesque feel", a small round (or canon), and a big climatic moment with both the Eb and Bb Soprano Clarinets. This a fun arrangement of this folk tune, so I hope you'll have some fun with it. Not everything on the page has to be done, and you can throw in some your own interpretation if you like.

This piece was composed during my last semester at Tarleton State University, where I studied with Dr. Trevor James-Smith. The whole idea behind the piece was for it to be based off a painting in the art hallway at the university. 

I. The Walk to the Take in the View:
The first movement of this piece is to depict the mystery and anticipation of walking up to the lake. You hear the same chorale in twice, one in a minor and one in a major key. The chorale, the second time, leads into the climax of the piece wher the listener has reached the lake and is taking in the view. The movemnet ends trimphantly as the listener starts walking down the path that's supposedly around the lake.

II. The Lake:
The second movement is taking the listener on a Hoe-Downn while they're next to the lake. The main melody that is the glue is first stated by a solo tuba, while accompanied the feet stomping and clapping by the other players. It then is a couple variations, whihc then turns into the climax of the piece. Afterwards, the beginning is repeated, but a little different. Everyone gets a chance to play the melody, but in harmony (Stacked chords/parallel motion). The piece then ends on a playful note, because not evreything in life needs to be serious and you can just need to take in the view.

To start off, I wrote this piece for my Junior Recital that took place in April 2021. During my junior year of college, I had went through a lot both in and outside the classroom. Because of this, I felt that I had grown a lot personally and muscially. Therefore, the main goal of this piece was for it be a soundscape of sorts to be a celebration of life. Then a few years later after, I'm into composing a lot more, so I decided to revisit the piece and make it just a little bit more fluent.

This piece represents (at least to me) what it feels like to "Let Go of the Past". It takes the listener on a peculiar journey through some dark moments as well as happy, but it ends leaving the listener confused and unsatisfied by the end, which is sometimes what can happen when letting go of something.

In March 2019, I had found out that a friend of mine was having mental health issues (and a lot going on in their life), and had decided that the best path for them was to take their own life. After finding this out, I had grieved for a couple days, and wanted to write a piece, both as a celebration of their life, and a message. 

That message is no matter what happens in life, or where you're at, just take a couple steps back, and look at your options and choose the path that will lead you to a happier life, and will also give yourself (or everyone around you) "Hope".

This piece is supposed to represent whenever someone is in a deep thought and is lost in that thought. I always wondered what different people go through or imgaine when they are lost in thought. the piece is "tonal", but is not really "tonal" like Beethoven or Mozart. Lost in the Mindspace

I wrote this piece back in the summer of 2021, when one of my friends at the time had given a compostion "challenge" of sorts. They had given me 6 scales at random (non-common scales) and told me to make a piece using only those 6 scales. With that said, the scales I had made me think of something very dark and broody. The tuning is very difficult to do well at all times, and everything in this piece (including the ending) just reminds me of  "Hell". Welcome to my "Hellscape!".

Life can be so unpredictable?joys and sorrows, beautiful blessings and distressing difficulties can come unexpectedly. Our life?s dreams and plans can change in an instant. We all know this to be true. So how can we find peace amid such turbulence?

Horatio Spafford knew something about life?s unexpected challenges. He was a successful attorney and real estate investor who lost a fortune in the great Chicago fire of 1871. Around the same time, his beloved four-year-old son died of scarlet fever.

Thinking a vacation would do his family some good, he sent his wife and four daughters on a ship to England, planning to join them after he finished some pressing business at home. However, while crossing the Atlantic Ocean, the ship was involved in a terrible collision and sunk. More than 200 people lost their lives, including all four of Horatio Spafford?s precious daughters. His wife, Anna, survived the tragedy. Upon arriving in England, she sent a telegram to her husband that began: ?Saved alone. What shall I do??

Horatio immediately set sail for England. At one point during his voyage, the captain of the ship, aware of the tragedy that had struck the Spafford family, summoned Horatio to tell him that they were now passing over the spot where the shipwreck had occurred.

As Horatio thought about his daughters, words of comfort and hope filled his heart and mind. He wrote them down, and they have since become a well-beloved hymn:

When peace like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll?
Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to know
It is well, it is well with my soul.

Perhaps we cannot always say that everything is well in all aspects of our lives. There will always be storms to face, and sometimes there will be tragedies. But with faith in a loving God and with trust in His divine help, we can confidently say, ?It is well, it is well with my soul.?
