Sound Wash Under a Waterfall is an adaptation of two separate works by Erik Satie: Gymnopedie no. 1 and Gnossienne no. 1. These tranquil, meditative pieces
have been some of my favorite pieces of "classical" music for years. To me, they evoke imagery of natural white noise. If you've ever been near rushing water like rapids or a waterfall, you know that it's a tenacious, almost overwhelming sound. If you stay long enough, it almost mutes your sense of hearing, and your other senses are heightened. When I was a kid, my family went to DeSoto State Park for Spring Break every year. Near the lodge, there was a small, 15-foot or so waterfall that you could walk behind. My friends and I would often make the hike down there to sit behind it in the small cavern.

This piece is a great tool for teaching nontraditional phrasing and reinforcing lyrical playing techniques. It can be played with two players on parts 1-3 and one confident player on part 4.

In Latvian folklore, vilkaci are werewolves. Unlike traditional
  werewolves, vilkaci aren't victims of others: a person transforms into a
  vilkaci, often accidentally, by standing between two pine trees that were
  grown at the same time. 
    
    
    
    March of the Vilkaci utilizes only the first six notes that students learn:
  concert Bb-G. I wrote it to reinforce 8th notes with my second-year (6th
  grade) students and to teach march style.

  be played with as few as one player on each battery part and one

<p>Vilkaci is the Latvian word for werewolf. Though the tales vary by region and by family, the way that someone is said to turn into a vilkaci is by standing between two Nordic pine trees that grew together. This flexible arrangement is a great march for your second-semester band kids who are ready to tackle some 8th notes and learn march style.</p>

The inspiration for "Babel" is is the ancient city of Babylon. I've always been enamored with the hazy, ethereal image I have in my head of the forsaken kingdom and the long-forgotten people who inhabited it.

Babel is a duet; it wasn't intended as a euphonium solo with marimba accompaniment. Both players have virtuosic moments throughout and are encouraged to improvise and embellish at their will. Though the piece was originally written for euphonium, the low brass part could comfortably be played on a trombone with an F trigger.

The Midnight Mass is a Catholic tradition of having mass at a late hour
  on Christmas Eve, traditionally at midnight.
    
    
    
    As someone who grew up outside of the Catholic faith, the idea
    
    of a midnight mass evokes a smoky, dark gathering of people by candlelight,
  in stark contrast from the cheerful gathering of friends and family that it
  is in real life.
    
    
    
    Written in the format of a midnight Christmas mass, this setting of three
  Christmas hymns, all in minor modes, can provide great contrast to your
  winter concert!
