Set as a bright swinger at about 200 bpm, and originally arranged for the WDR Big Band (Germany), Richard DeRosa's arrangement of the traditional Christmas song Angels We Have Heard on High is an adventure from beginning to end! Reminiscent of Neil Hefti's arrangement of Cute for the Count Basie Orchestra, DeRosa starts off with some interplay between the wind melody and drums. There's solo space for drums and piano or guitar, and the lead saxophone is on soprano. Replace the first "Gloria" section with a great bebop sax soli and this arrangement already has audiences waiting to hear what comes next. Inventive and creative!
