Grainger is known for developing British folk music into wonderfully innovative works for a variety of instruments. Originally written to feature different instruments in the eight-bar segments, Shepherd's Hey is beautifully adapted for handbells. Impeccable use of techniques include mallets, thumb damps, shakes, marts, and mart lifts. Passages of rung notes offset the stopped sounds and emphasize the melody throughout both staffs including passages of rung melody in the low bass. The addition of alternate bells (5 octaves) adds yet another interesting layer of sound. Your intermediate group will find this easier than Level 5 – that is, until they encounter the numerous section of chromatics! There is something for everyone in this wonderful arrangement.
