Adagio in A is a work for string orchestra. The mood builds throughout
the piece and is relatively somber. Much can be done with the tempo,
especially in the more passive passages. I begins and ends with a
contemplative chordal section containing several dissonant notes which
resolve and lead into the next bars. This sections grows into a local climax
and leads to the following sections which progressively contain more
movement. Each section builds in complexity and movement before slowing into
the final climax of the piece. The ending is the return to the slower, more
somber, chordal passages from the beginning.
