ADVENTURE celebrates the last of the Essex-built, dory fishing schooners. The composition opens with the mournful sound of a foghorn echoing through the dense early morning air. An English horn or clarinet play a somber melody as they set out to sea. At first, the ship slowly moves out of the harbor under power, but as the wind picks up, she sets sail and bounds over the ocean on her way to the banks. Suddenly, the wind fails, and she settles back into the water. Thoughts of home and friends lost at sea fill the fishermen’s minds as they row away in their dories to set their lines. The music moves again as the fishermen return, and there is great rejoicing over a bountiful catch. Finally, the music explodes as ADVENTURE sets sail and heads for home!
