"American Fanfare and March" is intended to capture the Concert Band Sound, a true American ideal. The opening theme, played by clarinets, is reminiscent of works written and performed during the "Golden Age of the American Concert Band" (1900-1950) and is a dominant melody throughout the work. In this updated edition, the folk song, "The Girl I Left Behind Me" was added to tie in a familiar tune to the work, giving the Trio section new life.
