"Amphibians" was composed as a result of a commission from "Band for Today" for their 2015 Advanced Honor Band, Paul Barton, Director. It is in two movements. The first is "Frogs and Toads" and begins with sounds of a swamp before moving to an allegro section with lots of "leaps." The second is "Salamanders" and makes use of a short chromatic idea that represents the salamanders swimming. A slower section, representing the endangerment of some species, follows. After a return to the opening material, a triumphant ending portrays the success of conservation efforts.
