This composition was composed for Paul Compton and the Oklahoma State University Wind Ensemble and the composer also created this version for trombone and piano. The Ballad is lyrical with long lines, rich harmonies, and the trombone part uses the high tessitura frequently. It is rhapsodic in form and has a trombone cadenza towards the end. Three variations follow that are based on motivic ideas from the Ballad. The first is in the style of a waltz, the second is a tango, and the last movement, a stomp. �This work is recorded by Paul Compton on the Emeritus label Trombonarama.
