A Christmas song for people who hate Christmas songs. The piece gradually transforms from dark to transcendent, mirroring a shift toward accepting the inner and outer dark many of us experience around the winter solstice. A quotation from "Carol of the Bells" is developed to parallel this transformation. Being able to make peace with it—or overcome it, depending on your interpretation—is what drives the piece's form.
