Deep in the Scene

An incredibly hip swing chart steeped in the language of the hard bop era. Tempo is a very manageable 165 bpm, but the language is more advanced than a typical swing-era chart. Trumpet and tenor sax state the melody as it gains strength throughout the first chorus. Even though the melody may be challenging, the solo changes are a familiar D minor blues progression. Solo opportunities are provided for numerous players, and there is a written solo provided for the bassist later in the piece. Following a short shout section, the drums get 16 bars to solo (with additive backgrounds) before returning to the top of the chart via D.C. al Coda.
