Franz Joseph HAYDN (1732-1809), aka "Papa Haydn" was a towering figure in the Classical Era of the late 18th-early 19th century, second only to Mozart in musical output and influence. His long life (unusual for the times) and longtime position at the court of the Esterhazys near Vienna assured him a high place in the esteem of his listening public, patrons and students (among them Beethoven). He is considered one of the great composers of symphonies (he composed 106!) and nearly singlehandedly invented the string quartet (68).
