These songs were extremely popular during the Civil War. They were sung by thousands of civilians and service men on the streets, in musical gatherings, and in music hall and concert performances. They have gone unheard for over a century and a half, but were a vital part of life during their time. They tell the day-to-day stories of lives, desires, opinions, politics, and feelings of the people, stories that can't be found in history books. These songs were originally published without music notation - lyrics only - as song sheets, broadsides and in songsters. The melodies in this book have been carefully researched for accuracy, then adapted and arranged by Ed Swanzey, life-long professional musician and history buff, whose great-grandfather was a Civil War veteran.  They are written here in modern notation with chord symbols, and transposed for easy play by period and modern folk instruments. From "Scarlet and Blue" or "Songs for Soldiers and Sailors." Published 1896. A delightful satire on a sea-story, about a battle fought during the NapoleonicWars, written by Capt. Frederick Marryat, RN., a distinguished veteran of overfifty battles in those conflicts. Captain Marryat was also an inventor, prolificnovelist and poet, who had run away to sea at the age of fourteen. During his naval career, he had guarded Napoleon on the Island of St. Helena, and ultimatelybrought the news of Napoleon's death to England. Arranged and adapted for modern folk instruments by Ed Swanzey.
