Falcon Summit is a work for string orchestra. The falcon is noted for speeds up to 200 mph as it performs a swoop to catch prey while airborne. A beautiful bird of color and pattern with a broad wingspan of pointed feathers is equipped with keen vision to spot prey from miles away. Like the eagle, falcons build their nests in high places such as on a mountain or a tall building. Falcons can be found all over the planet except in very cold climates. In a sport called falconry, these birds can be trained to capture and return small mammals. This music, full of seventh chords and open intervals, creates a vision of mystery and magic one can imagine while contemplating the falcon. The rollicking 6/8 meter, with swiftly moving ascending and descending melodic lines, represents the magnitude of flight. Set in e minor, as a falcon might begin a daily hunt, the music ends in G major signifying a successful catch and victory. The final chords and allargando put the bird at rest.
