FANTASY IN TWO MOVEMENTS

This percussion piece for beginning and emerging percussion ensemble was composed for an introduction to music performance class of 16 ninth grade students. The class had only a few students who had ever played music, let alone read it. The piece is just under three minutes with a slow first movement and a fast second. There were 16 students in the class, each playing one instrument. For publication Mr. Hazzard has included 5 extra parts which each combine two of the 16 parts so that the piece may be played by only 11 players. As the beginning students become more proficient at playing and reading the music, some of them might be switched to a part with two instruments. This is an excellent "real world" exercise for teaching basic note reading, counting, and ensemble performance. It also gives students the chance to play a wide range of percussion instruments.
