This contemporary and spirited arrangement is based on Hark! The Herald Angels Sing and Bring a Torch, Jeannette, Isabella. As the title suggests, the entire work thrives on rhythmic pulse. At times, the piece feels more like a fantasy than an arrangement as the melody weaves through an increasingly complex series of textures and harmonies before returning to the plaintive sounds of the opening.

The Odyssey is a timeless Greek tale that is relevant to every generation, and Soon Hee Newbold has created a thrilling musical depiction for your strings to play!  Odysseus' return home from the Trojan War was filled with obstacles and encounters with the Lotus Eaters, the Cyclops, the Sorceress Circe, and the enchanting Sirens,  among others. Multiple effects include col legno, mutes, and harmonics (which are all explained in detail in the performance notes). The incredible symphonic nature of the entire work gives your orchestra a huge sound without the need for any winds or percussion. It's a thrilling addition to any performance.

The Odyssey

Here is an easy holiday work featuring four carols that make a mini-symphony: Angels We Have Heard on High; Hark! the Herald Angels Sing; God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen and O Come, All Ye Faithful. Each piece flows directly into the next for a joyous medley that's not too hard and serves as a great opener or closer.

Four short movements make up this "petite symphony" constructed in the same form as the elements of a traditional symphony: Allegro non troppo; Largo; Scherzo and Allegro vivace. Each movement also refers to an element of nature. Movement 1, Air, is light and breathy, made up mostly of staccato notes. Water, the second movement, ripples and flows softly and gently. An homage to Holst's The Planets can be heard in Earth, the third movement. The piece concludes in an intense inferno with Fire. A powerful and cleverly composed piece!

Many fictional works portray the moon as a living being, alone in space looking down at the earth. This lullaby honors this "living moon," portraying various emotions, including the loneliness of seeing us from space as well as moments of comfort, much as a parent watches over a child. Simply stunning!

Dark, passionate melodies are overcome with heavy metal inflection in this incredibly innovative and unique work for strings. The cello section imitates distorted guitar timbres, while upper strings soar over pulsating rhythms. This piece proves that guitars and drums are not required to rock heavy metal!

Kick off your holiday program with this powerful and festive overture that's an outstanding concert opener. Featuring a mix of original themes and snippets of holiday favorites from lyrical to emphatic, this work does not sound like a medley but an echoing fanfare.

Feature a guest artist or star student in this piece that includes an advanced-level violin solo along with an optional easier solo. Well within the technical grasp of young orchestras, the music is designed to allow the soloist to display both technique and lyricism as the piece moves through a series of "diversions" held together by a common theme.

Comet Ride

Tension sets in with the opening cello solo, swathed in mysticism and an omen for the adventure to come. Ethereal harmonic colors of the night sky where Orion was imprisoned give way to a high energy,  6/8 main theme, depicting the conqueror's epic journeys that made him a legend. This one packs lots of cinematic thrill for performers and audiences to enjoy!

Orion and the Scorpion

This modern work based on Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven" tells the eerie story of a man confronted by a sinister bird, and his slow descent into utter madness. A haunting piano line starts the piece, surrounded by contemporary effects and textures. As the man becomes more irritated, the music picks up in tempo and becomes increasingly dissonant and violent until it erupts in a cacophony of chaos. Finally, the man "breaks," and the unsettling sounds of the opening piano return to conclude the piece. A truly dramatic work for band.
