There are many natural wonders in the world. Nature provides an infinite canvas of
beauty. One of my favorite natural
works of art is called Garden of the Gods, located in Colorado Springs,
CO. The scene leaves one awestruck as
an array of deep-red, pink and white sandstones, conglomerates and limestone
rocks shoot up from the ground in mysterious, sometimes precarious,
formations. A recent visit sparked my
imagination, as I strolled quietly along the path, peering into many crevices
created by the rock sculptures, and gazing at the massive blue sky
surrounding the park. It truly is an
amazing sight. I wondered about the history, how the sculptures were created
and felt grateful man had decided to preserve this site, creating a national
park for all to enjoy. This music for
band presents the majesty, mystery and wonder of Garden of the Gods. It is staged in Bb major, but takes a turn
into Eb minor, to remind us of the vast history and events that might have
taken place in this location over the centuries. Instrumentalists will be
challenged to play in a new key signature and to calculate exciting
rhythms. As with all my works,
everyone gets a chance to play a melody at some point!
