Black spirituals are often put into two categories: They are either about hardships encountered here on earth, or the reward expected in heaven. This spiritual exemplifies the latter. "Good news, the chariot's a-coming, and I don't want it to leave me behind." In this case the chariot is a metaphor for heaven. The singers do not want to miss heaven where they believe there is a snowy white robe, a silver crown, and a big golden harp all waiting for them. The piece is basically homophonic although the parts are very melodic which allows inexperienced singers to grasp the harmony more easily. American choristers of all ages enjoy singing arrangements of black spirituals. In one sense, they are a type of American classical music.
