Francesca Caccini (1587-1641) Florence, Italy. Composer, singer, lutenist, poet, and music teacher of the early Baroque era. Called the "Songbird of Florence" Francesca was a virtuoso performer who is credited with being the first women to write an opera. Much of her music was written for comedy stage performance in collaboration with poet Michelangelo Buonarroti the Younger (grand-nephew of the artist). Little of her music survives but she was said to be a quick and prolific composer. Francesca was one of the highest paid musicians in the Medici court a recognized master of all aspects of musical composition. Poster made from an original painting by Al Moretti.
