One might characterize High-Rise as industrial music for the piano. The composer sought to represent musically the development and construction of a skyscraper. At times, the work uses dense sonorities, jagged lines and figures as well as blocks of sound rather than chords to achieve its goals. Still, there are other moments in the piece where there is clear harmonic motion and pleasant tunes as the high-rise appears to be developing new levels built on each other. The work culminates in a section where the achievement is complete and the majestic design of a towering building is represented. High-Rise is a challenging work for the pianist looking for new directions in piano performance.
