Based on the choral theme from Chopin's Impromptu Op. 36, this theme and variations explores thematic, rhythmic, and gestural transformations from the impromptu, as well as echoes from other Chopin works, including the Preludes (Op. 24) and Scherzo No. 2 (Op.31). The work is dedicated to the memory of the composer's mother, who would practice the piano while she thought her kids were sleeping.
