When I started the first drafts of In a noisy world, I knew that I wanted to feature big contrasts in style that would run the gamut of emotional expression. I also wanted to highlight the versatility of the given instrumentation by balancing challenging and complex music with more accessible, lyric passages.
The piece is divided into three large sections. The outer sections juxtapose huge chaotic tuttis with a groovy main theme, while the inner section provides a rest from the chaos with a lush melodic section. The piece is primarily centered around a Cmaj9 sonority, but that main sonority is often challenged by Bmaj7+9 and Dbdom7+9 harmonic centers.
Programmatically, I wanted the music to suggest the multi-layered complexities of human emotion. Each of us, in some capacity, has struggled with identity, particularly during this age of constant distraction and stimulation. The interaction of the different musical passages is meant to represent an inner communication, trying find one's self amidst the turmoil of daily life.
