"In Silence Under Many a Star" begins with a passage of dissonant chords, played as softly as possible by the piano, evoking the image of the title. Melodic fragments gradually emerge from nothingness. Soon, violin and clarinet introduce a long, slow theme over a gentle ostinato in the piano; in the score, this is identified as a 'Danse Macabre,' to be played very slowly, gently and caressing. After an explosion of joyous energy, the 'Danse Macabre' returns, slowly drifting away into the night.
