Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity from The Planets – Program Notes
Arranged by Tom LaJoie
Grade 3 - Easy
Gustav Holst’s Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity is one of the most celebrated movements from The Planets, known for its exuberant energy and broad, noble melodies. At its core lies a soaring hymn-like theme, later adapted into the hymn tune Thaxted, which captures a sense of warmth, unity, and grandeur. This arrangement presents that iconic material in a form accessible to young string players, transposed from the original key of E-flat major to G major for greater comfort and resonance.
In Holst’s original scoring, much of the string writing is presented in unison, with harmonic richness supplied by the brass. In this adaptation, those harmonic elements have been thoughtfully redistributed to the inner string parts, allowing students to experience a fuller ensemble texture while developing their understanding of balance and harmony. A brief repetition of selected phrases helps shape the music into a satisfying standalone work, making it an ideal choice for young ensembles seeking to explore expressive phrasing, tonal blend, and the uplifting character of Holst’s music.
