"La Tipica" was a polka written by Italian composer Carlos Curti (Carlo Curti) in 1895. He was born in Italy in 1859. He immigrated to the United States and then to Mexico City in 1884. He created the Orquestra Tipica Mexicana (Mexican Typical Orchestra) made of musicians from the National Conservatory of Music in Mexico City. In this orchestra he had the musicians dress in charro outfits which highlighted their patriotic heritage. Mariachi musicians, who were looked down upon by social elites, adopted the charro outfit as their standard outfit to help boost their image in society. The charro outfit "traje de charro" is still in use today by mostly all mariachi groups. "La Tipica" has been added to the repertoire of polkas for norteno musicians such as, Narciso Martinez, Santiago Jimenez and Valerio Longoria. This arrangement is written for advanced mariachi ensemble.
